Next! Alpha Centaurids Meteor Shower

Minor Meteor Shower

Minor Meteor Shower

The next meteor shower, the α-Centaurids, has started. The Alpha Centaurids is a minor meteor shower with usually very little activity. This meteor shower will peak on February 8th and will remain active until February February 21st.  Although this shower is considered consistent, it doesn’t produce amazing meteor displays. Meteor gazers can expect about five meteors per hour during the peak date.

Because during the first quarter of the year there is a lack of strong meteor showers until April it’s a good time to browse around this blog and get acquainted with all of the meteor showers of last year. Meteor showers occur during the same months each year, you will find old blog posts about other meteor showers that will help you know when the meteor showers are coming this year. I will be posting new information and meteor facts, so in the meantime, bookmark the site, join the mailing list and keep your head up!

Our family just spotted a shooting fireball across the night sky right over our heads. It seemed rather close for a meteorite, but it couldn’t have been anything else. We witnessed it from the Central Coast town of Atascadero, CA at about 6:45 pm. We wonder if anyone else noticed it. We were at the Atascadero High School soccer game. It seemed to travel from the south to the north.

    Monica,

Hopefully someone will respond here. Thanks for the comment :) You might want to check the glossary here on this site. There is a big difference between meteor and meteorite.

We saw a spectacular meteor last night driving on I-15 south of Idaho Falls, Idaho. We were headed south near the Shelley exit at 7:30 pm. It was about 1 mile ahead, 200 feet high, angled at 35 to 40 degrees from east to west. It had a white head with a blue tail, then is flamed, streaked, and flamed again, before going dark.

There was a fire along the freeway where it may have hit, but we are unable to confirm if the fire and meteor were related.

    Charmaine,

Thanks for the comment. 200 Feet sounds pretty close. Most fireballs and meteors burn up 40 to 60 miles high, I suspect this may have been true for your sighting as well. I doubt that the fire you saw was related to the meteor, however I share in your enthusiasm to think, “wow, we just saw a meteor hit the Earth” because they always seem so close and it does happen, but it’s not likely.

    Keep your head up!

Saw a huge fireball tonight just north of DC; 19:30, southern sky…travelling west to east across Orion. Possibly the largest and lowest meteor I’ve seen this close to the city.

I just saw a very BRIGHT greenish-lit meteor that dropped a bit of red…SSW of Toronto, about 30 degrees up around 6:15pm.

Must be part of this event I’d guess but was way brighter than anything I’ve seen before!

    Adrian,

Not all meteors one sees are part of a meteor shower. It may have been and… it may have not been a part of this event. Thanks for the comment.
