With the Perseids Meteor Shower ending on August 24th I find myself anticipating other meteor showers later in the year. Unfortunately I had cloudy skies and only saw a few meteors.

Here are the meteor showers happening now. Please be advised that except for the Perseids, (not the September Perseids) the following are minor meteor showers that will produce mild activity and things don’t start picking up again until October.

  • Perseids active Jul 17 – Aug 24 and peaked Aug 12
  • κ-Cygnids active Aug 3 – 25 and peaks Aug 17
  • α-Aurigids active Aug 25 – Sep 8 and peaks Sep 1
  • September Perseids active Sep 5 – 17 and peaks Sep 9
  • δ-Aurigids active between Sep 18 – Oct 10 and peaks Sep 29

I will be posting every week and gearing up for what I feel will be the best meteor shower of the year, the Leonids. In the meantime bookmark the site, keep your head up and look out for the next show!

    10.44pm – East Coast – Lowestoft

Over a period of about 15mins, Approx 10 – 15 meteors enetered our atmosphere and looked to burn up above the North Sea! These seemed to be travelling in groups of 1 – 3.

About 4:30 AM (guess?) camping near Sisters, Oregon, saw a bright star traveling west to east like a plane…it stopped briefly at about 45 degrees in the eastern sky and got VERY bright, shooting off short light beams in 4 directions (for less than a second). It then continued onward to drop towards the horizon getting dimmer and smaller as it fell….finally it disappeared on the eastern horizon. I have no idea what this was, but I am guessing the pause/brightening was when the object hit the atmosphere and basically “blew up”….???

Last night, Aug 21, at around 11pm, my husband and I saw a really unusual meteor in the high southern sky. (We’re in Northern California) It was very fast, a very bright but thin trail, with a downward trajectory. It flashed bright about two or three times before it disappeared. Any ideas if it was part of a shower, or a sporadic?
    Maybe a Cygnid?
Whatever it was it was very cool!

    Karen,

It may have been a Cygnid or Perseid meteor or sporadic. I would have to been there to make a better guess. You may have seen a bolide or fireball, check the glossary on this site.

    AJF,

Sound like a fireball or bolide. When you say it stopped I’m a little confused.

    Keep your head up!

My husband and I enjoyed sky gazing Wed. the 12th –the last clear night for our Pine River, Manitoba area. Between 10:40 and 10:55 pm we sighted 8 meteors, some directly overhead and others toward the east. The moon rose shortly after that and diminished the view and within a few hours there were enough light clouds to obscure the view. Thanks for the information!

live in Tempe, AZ and saw an amazing star show. I was outside between 10:30 and 12:30 at night on Sunday, August 23. It was absolutely breathtaking. I thought I missed the Perseids on August 12, but that night it was cloudy and I saw nothing. Do you have any information on the validity of what I actually saw on August 23? I thought I was imagining things until I saw so many of them. Thank you thank you thank you!

    Forrest,

Wow I love your enthusiasm! The Perseids were active Jul 17 – Aug 24 and peaked Aug 12 and the κ-Cygnids were active Aug 3 – 25 and peaked Aug 17. You may have seen a combination of the two showers near their end.

Keep your head up! bookmark the site, there are better meteor showers coming!
