Sue,

Sounds like a fireball or meteor. They can take a horizontal path in the sky and even though it appeared "close" it may have still been very high in the atmosphere, still close enough to make you say, "WOW!".

Sounds cool!

Hi there,

I live north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and on my way home around 6:00 p.m. I saw a meteor (?) just above the treetops going east to west, (horizontally). It was very quick. I just happened to be driving past an open field with a couple of trees, when I turned to look at the sunset, and there it was! It looked like a star with a tail that fizzled out in a few seconds. I have seen shooting stars way up in the sky but never something this close to me! It was a nice Valentine's gift ;)

Anne,

The Quadrantids peaked on January 3rd at 12:50 Universal Time which translates to 7:50 AM Eastern Standard Time. So my safest guess is: YES!

The Quadrantids is one of the strongest meteor showers of the year if not the strongest. It was very cold (20 degrees) where I am in CT and I managed to stay out for about 20 minutes. I witnessed almost 25 visible meteors in that period and then the clouds rolled over the sky. The Quadrantids have been known to produce in excess of 120 meteors an hour!

The most popular meteor shower in the USA is the Perseids which occurs during summer months when it is warm outside. Unfortunately the next few months are slow for meteor showers. Bookmark the site and check with me at the beginning of each month for the next meteor shower. There is basically something visible every month of the year. Some are stronger than others.

Stay in touch and keep your head up!

Hi Meteor Mark,
I was letting my dogs out at about dawn on Saturday, Jan. 3rd when I saw a light streak in the sky just above the treetops (I don't mean that it was close in distance, but rather low in the sky) going east to west. The sky was already pretty light. I live in an urban area -- Milwaukee, WI.
I have rarely seen meteors. It only see them when I am out in rural areas -- and I actually thought they mostly occurred in August!
I started looking on the internet for information on meteor showers. I found your site and am just amazed by the information you have here.
Could I have seen one of the quadrantids meteors?
Thanks. Anne

Reporting from Andover, MA, USA. 1140PM local time, 3-Jan-09.

My wife and I both saw a bright blue ball with a slightly 'wiggly' trail, lasting a couple of seconds, facing south.

Anyone else report this? I reported it on the AMS website.

Just curious.
